A RETROSPECTIVE

These pictures show the changing themes of my work over the last 20 years. With all the changes, I've always been inspired by watching people move. I like walking about the city, watching them come and go. It's a spectacle of shape and size, gait and rhythm. It's always about movement and the relationships it expresses. I focus on the body in action, on moving and watching others move, on the street, on the dance floor, on the playing field or anywhere at all. The body isn't a passive receptacle for meaning, something shaped by culture and conditioning, it's an active force, reaching out to change the world. I've been inspired by artists that share this vision, by Muybridge and Marey, by Rembrandt's crowded compositions where every posture reveals the soul, and by comics with their action heroes always on the move. These are images that show the body as a vector, not an object.
